Bead Retreat

Each year, we produce our annual Bead Retreat at the Tolovana Inn in Cannon Beach, Oregon.

Margaret Scovil Bead Challenge 2021

'Get your groove thang'- a 1970's music theme

– Must be composed of at least 50% beads
– Does not need to be wearable
– There is no size limitation however if you would like the piece to also be entered in the Library Show, keep in mind that approximately 10” in any direction is the maximum size
– One entry per person
– Must be made after March 2020
– The piece must include a typed artist statement or explanation of the interpretation or inspiration for the entry to be included with the display – Entries that do not meet the criteria may be disqualified.

Criteria for the project: -

  • Must be made after March 2019
    Must be wearable
    Must be made with at least 50% beads
    There is no size limit, but keep size in mind if your piece will be included in the Travelling Library Show. The ideal size approximately 10” in height and depth.
    Only Retreat attendees may enter the M. Scovil Retreat Bead Challenge. Anyone in PBS may enter the Member Challenge that is held at the general meeting following the Bead Retreat.
    Please include a typed artist or inspiration statement for display.
    One entry per attendee.

    Prizes: 1st, 2nd & 3rd places and Honorable Mention. Winners are chosen by vote of peers (retreat attendees for tor Retreat Challenge winners, meeting attendees vote for the Member Challenge winners).

The challenge entry may be disqualified if these requirements are not met.


2018 PBS Bead Retreat Margaret Scovil Challenge

"OUT THERE, EXTRATERRESTRIALS AND OTHER BEINGS"

Are there aliens out there? I’m pretty sure they are related to the monster under
my bed, some of those deep sea creatures, mushrooms or maybe even
unicorns. What might they look like to you? These are creatures that would
not be found in any textbook.

Criteria for the project:

  • The piece does not need to be wearable, but may be

  • Must be made after March 2017

  • The finished piece must be composed of at least 75% beads, any technique is acceptable

  • There is no size limit, but keep size in mind if your piece will be included in the Travelling Library Show. The ideal size for the library show is approximately 8” in height and depth.

  • Only Retreat attendees may enter the Retreat Bead Challenge. Anyone other than the Retreat winners may enter the Member Challenge that is held at the general meeting following the Bead Retreat.

  • Finished piece must include a written/typed artist statement for display

One entry per attendee
The challenge entry may be disqualified if these requirements are not met.


2017 Margaret M. Scovil Bead Challenge Theme

"The Animal Within"

Do you have a totem or spirit animal which speaks to you?  Or perhaps you have a special connection with a particular animal or pet?  Is there a creature which takes your breath away as you watch it running free?  Maybe you have an alter ego…Show through your beadwork your own special “animal within”.

  • size limits: must be small enough to fit through a door, and large enough to be easily seen. Please keep the size in mind if you will be exhibiting in the traveling library show which follows the competition.

  • may be 2 or 3 dimensional. Does not need to be wearable.

  • must include AT LEAST 50% beads.

  • must be created between March 2016 and March 2017.

  • must include a typed artist statement or explanation of the inspiration for the entry.

  • only retreat attendees may enter the retreat bead challenge.

  • one entry per attendee.

Prizes: 1st, 2nd, & 3rd places and Honorable Mention
Your piece may be disqualified if the criteria requirements are not met.


2016 MARGARET M. SCOVIL BEAD CHALLENGE THEME

"Kandinsky's 'Blue Segment' 1921"

Criteria for project:

  • Entry is to be inspired by the painting “Blue Segment” (color version on PBS website or search online)

  • The piece must be wearable

  • Must be made between March 2015 and March 2016

  • Entry should be composed of at least 50% beads

  • May be two or three dimensional

  • No size limitation-keep the size in mind if you would like it included in the Traveling Library Show.

  • Must include a typed artist statement or explanation of the interpretation/inspiration for the entry

  • Only retreat attendees may enter the Retreat Bead Challenge

  • One entry per attendee

Prizes: 1st, 2nd & 3rd places and Honorable Mention
Your entry may be disqualified if these requirements are ignored


2015 Margaret M. Scovil Bead Challenge Theme

"IT'S A NORTHWEST THING"

This one's open to interpretation and here are the criteria for the project:

  • The piece does not need to be wearable

  • Must be made between March 2014 and March 2015

  • The finished piece may be two- (flat) or three-dimensional

  • The finished piece must be composed of at least 75% beads.

  • Maximum size limitation is 15" in any one direction.

    • NOTE: the ideal size for the library show is approximately 8" height and depth. The library show's theme reflects the retreat challenge theme. If you'd like to make a challenge piece that will also go through the library show, keep this size limit in mind.

  • Only Retreat attendees may enter the Retreat Bead Challenge

  • One entry per attendee

Prizes: 1st, 2nd, & 3rd places and Honorable Mention

Your entry may be disqualified if these requirements are ignored.
